I know what you’re thinking. There’s only one way to charge an iPhone and it looks something like this.
I thought so too. Apparently not. Before we get onto the worldly wisdom provided by battery company Battery University, it’s worth noting just how terrible the battery life is on an iPhone. What makes it worse is that some random guy told me the other day that the battery is crap because they want to keep the phones slim. To be honest, I couldn’t give a dam if somebody wants to body shame my phone, just give me something that lasts longer than half a day.
Phones are stupid expensive, and so we’re stuck with what we’ve got for now. The guys at Battery University have given these tips on how to get the most juice out of your phone, and it probably is the complete opposite to what you have been doing thus far.
Don’t leave your phone in when it’s fully charged. So all of us folks who like to charge our phones overnight are doing more damage than good. Apparently once your phone hits the magic 100% charged status, it gets what is known as ‘trickle charges’ to keep it at that level. But, by doing that, it keeps the battery in a high-tension state, and that wears down the chemistry within.
In fact, don’t let it charge to 100% at all. It may seem pretty silly not to get the maximum potential out of your battery, but apparently it’s for the better in the long run. “Li-ion does not need to be fully charged, nor is it desirable to do so. In fact, it is better not to fully charge, because a high voltage stresses the battery.” You don’t want a stressed battery now do you?
Plug it in whenever you can. What they are saying is you are better off doing regular, small charging sessions as opposed to one big charge when the battery is nearly dead. The dream scenario is to charge your phone when it loses 10% of its battery. That’s pretty unrealistic, a walk to the shops can often see you lose 10% and nobody wants to be charging their phone in Tesco. But you get the idea, small doses means less stress on your battery.
That’s some useful info that most of us will no doubt disregard as we are set in our ways. All this battery chat got me thinking about this scene from Big Hero 6 so I’m going to leave it here for no real reason.
